本杰明·富蘭克林 / Benjamin Franklin 本杰明·富蘭克林(1706—1790),18世紀(jì)美國(guó)最偉大的科學(xué)家,著名的政治家和文學(xué)家。他生于北美洲的波士頓,幼年家境貧窮,一生只受過(guò)兩年正式教育。八歲入學(xué),十歲輟學(xué),此后又當(dāng)了近十年的印刷工人。但他自學(xué)從未間斷過(guò),從自然科學(xué)、技術(shù)方面的讀物到著名科學(xué)家的論文以及名家作品,無(wú)不涉獵。
1726年,他出版了《窮查理歷書(shū)》,當(dāng)時(shí)被譯成十二種文字,暢銷(xiāo)歐美各國(guó),也奠定了他在文學(xué)上地位。獨(dú)立戰(zhàn)爭(zhēng)爆發(fā)后,他參加了第二屆大陸會(huì)議和《獨(dú)立宣言》的起草工作。
1790年4月17日,深夜11點(diǎn),富蘭克林溘然逝去。他一生最真實(shí)的寫(xiě)照是他自己所過(guò)的一句話“誠(chéng)實(shí)和勤勉,應(yīng)該成為你永久的伴侶?!北疚氖亲髡哂?780年創(chuàng)作的,當(dāng)時(shí)他正在法國(guó)為國(guó)事奔走,卻仍然有閑情雅致寫(xiě)這種輕松的文章,此文足以窺見(jiàn)作者美國(guó)式的幽默和機(jī)智。
