在1800年大選中,他與阿倫·伯爾(1756—1836)在選舉團獲得了相同的73票。1801年2月,眾議院再度投票,以超過半數(shù)得票(36票)的結(jié)果確認杰斐遜為總統(tǒng)。在杰斐遜的任期內(nèi),他以每英畝2.5美分的價格向拿破侖皇帝(1769—1821)購買了路易斯安那,由此將美國領土擴大了兩倍。
