DRINKING ALONE UNDER THE MOON Li Bai (701-762)
With a jug of wine among flowers,
Alone I drink, unaccompanied by anyone I know.
I raise my cup to invite the bright moon:
Including my shadow, a party of three I throw.
The moon knows not the pleasure of drinking;
My shadow vainly follows me wherever I go.
The moon and shadow are for now my companions:
Let’s enjoy life while our young hearts glow.
As I sing, the moon lingers around;
As I dance, my shadow moves in disarray.
When I’m sober, together we make merry;
When I’m drunk, separate we stay.
Let’s pledge forever to be passionless roaming partners,
To meet again in the faraway Milky Way.

FAREWELL ON AN ANCIENT MEADOW
Bai Juyi (772-846)
Here and there,
grasses thrive in the meadow;
Year after year,
they wither and grow.
Never can wildfire wipe them out:
Revive they will,
when the spring winds blow.
Stretching far and wide,
upon an ancient road they intrude;
Glistening and emerald green,
into a ruined city they go.
Again I see my dear prince friend off…
Among the lush grasses,
parting sentiments overflow.

ARRIVAL OF A GUEST (Rejoicing at the arrival of Magistrate Cui)
Du Fu (712-770)
North and south of my cottage,
runs the spring flood tide;
Day after day, only gulls
are seen in flocks coming by.
Never has the flowery path
been swept for a guest;
For you today for the first time,
the wicker gate open I.
Far from the market,
few dishes can I serve;
In a poor family,
only stale wine can I supply.
Would you like drinking together
with my elder neighbour?
Across the fence him I’ll call
to drink our last cups dry.
