It was thefirst reading series to enforce strict vocabulary control over selections. WilliamS. Gray， a renowned educational psychologist and reading authority from theUniversity of Chicago became a senior co-author with William H. 作者簡介

　　威廉· Ｓ· 格雷（William Scott Gray， 1885- 1960）美國芝加哥大學(xué)博士、教授，曾擔(dān)任芝加哥大學(xué)教育系研究生院閱讀研究專業(yè)主任，及世界閱讀學(xué)會首任會長。在近40 年的時(shí)間里，他一直是世界閱讀研究的權(quán)威學(xué)者。他在芝加哥大學(xué)的博士論文題為“小學(xué)閱讀的標(biāo)準(zhǔn)化測試”。他帶領(lǐng)的研究團(tuán)隊(duì)，將閱讀技巧訓(xùn)練與閱讀效果檢測相結(jié)合，并將學(xué)術(shù)研究成果應(yīng)用于學(xué)校閱讀教材的編寫，《Basic Readers》便是他與另一位教育者和教材編寫專家合作的成果。威廉· Ｈ· 愛爾森（William Harris Elson，1856-1935）出生于美國俄亥俄州卡洛爾，畢業(yè)于美國印第安納大學(xué)。作為一位教師與教育管理者，他在教育改革方面做出了很大貢獻(xiàn)。1907 年他建立了美國第一所技術(shù)高中。此外，他還是一位著名的教材編寫者，除本套教材外，他編寫了多套美國學(xué)校使用的現(xiàn)代教材。這些教材除美國外，在全球34 個(gè)國家銷售使用，累計(jì)銷量超過5000萬冊。
