《新世紀大學英語系列教材·普通高等教育“十一五”國家級規(guī)劃教材：綜合教程5（學生用書）》前四冊旨在幫助高校學生在中學英語學習的基礎上，進一步提高和完善“聽”、“說”、“讀”、“寫”、“譯”諸方面的基本技能，實現(xiàn)《大學英語課程教學要求》規(guī)定的“一般要求”的教學目標，并向“較高要求”的目標過渡。第五、六冊則協(xié)同《視聽說教程》、《閱讀教程》、《快速閱讀》和《寫作教程》的第五、六冊引導學習者實現(xiàn)“較高要求”的教學目標。本冊為第五冊的學生用書。第五冊按照篇章的修辭模式編排課文，旨在引導學習者熟悉篇章的修辭模式，把握篇章的內在邏輯和層次體系，弄清文章脈絡，從而準確地理解篇章的主旨和作者的寫作意圖，鑒賞作者的寫作技巧；教學重點也從句、段的理解轉向通篇分析和寫作技巧的鑒賞，把EXPLORE THE WRITER’S IDEAS和EXPLORE THE WRITER’S TECHNIQUES作為課堂教學的主線；所設置的課內和課外學習活動比前四冊更具有思辨性（詳見“寫給同學的話”）。
