　　全國(guó)英語(yǔ)等級(jí)考試（Public English lestSystem，簡(jiǎn)稱PETS）是教育部考試中心設(shè)計(jì)并負(fù)責(zé)的全國(guó)性英語(yǔ)水平考試。PETS是我國(guó)惟一面向全體社會(huì)公民的多級(jí)別的權(quán)威英語(yǔ)測(cè)試體系，人們可以根據(jù)自己的英語(yǔ)水平選擇參加其中任何一個(gè)級(jí)別的考試。PETS分為筆試和口試兩個(gè)相對(duì)獨(dú)立的考查部分，對(duì)考生聽(tīng)、說(shuō)、讀、寫(xiě)等能力進(jìn)行全面考查，對(duì)合格者頒發(fā)相應(yīng)的英語(yǔ)等級(jí)證書(shū)，以滿足社會(huì)上英語(yǔ)能力鑒定和人才市場(chǎng)的需求。高等教育自學(xué)考試專科和本科的公共英語(yǔ)考試己分別承認(rèn)PETS-2和PETS-3考試。PFTS-5考試已經(jīng)替代了主要用于評(píng)價(jià)公派出國(guó)留學(xué)人員英語(yǔ)水平的全國(guó)外語(yǔ)水平考試（WSK）中的英語(yǔ)水平考試（EPT）。PETS-2和PETS-4考試的標(biāo)準(zhǔn)和題型已經(jīng)用于改造了全國(guó)普通高考和全國(guó)碩士研究生入學(xué)統(tǒng)一考試中的英語(yǔ)考試。有關(guān)省份的普通高考英語(yǔ)聽(tīng)力考試成績(jī)采用PETS-2聽(tīng)力考試成績(jī)，高考外語(yǔ)類考生的口試使用了PETS－2口試。
