  本書(shū)從口語(yǔ)交際和語(yǔ)篇組織結(jié)構(gòu)兩個(gè)視角來(lái)比較中美文化的交際風(fēng)格,這兩個(gè)視角不僅與信息交流有關(guān),而且與交際中的社會(huì)關(guān)系的處理有關(guān)。本書(shū)指出,間接式與直接式風(fēng)格在中美文化中分別占有主導(dǎo)地位,這種差異不僅體現(xiàn)在口語(yǔ)的交往方面,而且也體現(xiàn)在筆語(yǔ)的語(yǔ)篇組織結(jié)構(gòu)方面。這種相同或一致性表明,中美之間在交際風(fēng)格方面的差異絕不是偶然現(xiàn)象。這是中國(guó)人和美國(guó)人在日常交際,甚至在學(xué)術(shù)寫(xiě)作中系統(tǒng)的和一貫的做法。本書(shū)的分析和探討證實(shí)了中國(guó)文化中的交際與語(yǔ)篇組織結(jié)構(gòu)對(duì)間接式風(fēng)格更為側(cè)重,而美國(guó)文化中的交際與語(yǔ)篇組織結(jié)構(gòu)對(duì)直接式風(fēng)格更為側(cè)重。盡管幾乎所有的文化在日常的交往與交際中都采用這兩種風(fēng)格,然而,側(cè)重程度因文化而異。為了分析和解釋兩國(guó)文化的交際與語(yǔ)篇組織結(jié)構(gòu)風(fēng)格的差異,書(shū)中提供了一個(gè)框架。
